Chai Lai Orchid Eco Lodge: An Ethical Elephant Sanctuary Near Chiang Mai

Why Visit Chai Lai Orchid Eco Lodge

Due to habitat loss and deforestation, there are no wild elephants left in northern Thailand. That’s where Chai Lai Orchid Eco Lodge and Café comes in — an ethical elephant sanctuary and jungle escape located about one hour outside of Chiang Mai.

Here, 22 rescued Asian elephants roam freely under the care of local trainers called “Mahouts”. Staying here means you’re not only surrounded by nature but also helping fund anti-trafficking and education programs for local women in the Karen community.

Getting There

Chai Lai Orchid is deep in the jungle, and the road in is steep, muddy, and absolutely requires a 4WD vehicle. Google Maps doesn’t give the correct location, either. Booking the hotel’s transfer service ensures you’ll have a driver who knows the terrain.

Please, for the love of God — don’t book transport outside of the hotel.

There are three areas at Chai Lai Orchid:

  • Mountain View – within walking distance to the café and main reception
  • Garden (Lotus & Ginger Suites) – peaceful and lush (accessible by shuttle)
  • Riverside – where elephants often bathe around 2 PM (accessible by shuttle)

Riverside offers incredible views and close elephant encounters, but getting there means crossing a large stream by a small bridge— tricky during rainy season when water levels rise. The staff help carry your bags, but it’s still a bit of a trek.

We stayed garden-side, mostly because that was what was available for our group (and, honestly, I wasn’t eager to wade through a river with luggage). It cost $44 per person per night, including breakfast — and yes, breakfast for the elephants, too. 🙂

Breakfast With Elephants

At check-in, you’ll be asked what time you’d like breakfast. We requested 8:30 AM, though it usually arrived whenever the elephants were done visiting.

Enjoying breakfast in the room

Breakfast options include pancakes or chicken skewers with sticky rice, plus a basket of sugar cane to feed the elephants. I highly recommend buying extra food during happy hour the day before (buy 2 baskets, get 1 free) and saving it for the morning — our elephants usually came by around 7:45 and didn’t return later, so make sure you empty those sugar cane baskets before they leave.

The Staff & Community

Most of the team at Chai Lai Orchid are refugees from the Karen hill tribe. Staying here supports fair employment, education, and anti-trafficking efforts in their community. Each room in the garden homestay belongs to 1 Karen hill tribe family, so each night our stay was directly supporting them!

The staff were genuinely kind, and many sell handmade crafts you can buy that provide another means of support for the Karen hill tribe.

Café Favorites & Happy Hour

You must try the mango chicken — it’s absolutely sinful. Additionally, their Thai tea is the best I’ve had anywhere in Thailand, and surprisingly, so was the truffle pasta.

During happy hour, you can enjoy cocktails while elephants wander nearby (buy one, get one free). Elephant food is also discounted — 200 baht for three baskets, so everyone’s happy!

Feeding the Elephants

Each elephant eats around 150 kg (330 lbs) of food every single day. Their favorite snacks are sugar cane, bananas, and bamboo — in that order.

If you’ve got a treat, say “bon!” and they’ll open their mouths wide enough for you to feed them.

Watching these gentle giants up close was easily one of the best experiences of our trip. Before you leave, say hi to Bamboo, the baby elephant. He’s adorable, mischievous, and endlessly curious — don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Why It’s Worth It

Staying at Chai Lai Orchid Eco Lodge isn’t just a bucket-list travel experience — it’s a chance to travel responsibly and directly support wildlife conservation and women’s empowerment in Thailand.
